MW4 DMZ bosses: Lieutenants, Commanders and the Boss Board

How Lieutenants and Commanders differ, how to find them, what they drop, how the Boss Board works and how to survive the Dog Tag Case.

Quick answers

What is the difference between Lieutenants and Commanders?
Lieutenants are named mini-bosses who may appear in any match and can be tracked with paid intel. Commanders (Colossus, Deathstalker, the battle tank) are always somewhere on the map and cannot have intel bought.
When does the Boss Board unlock?
After your second DMZ Order.
How do you beat the Deathstalker?
Capture a nearby SAM Site and stay close. It fires on enemy aircraft.

Two kinds of boss

Hajin has two tiers of boss, and they work differently.

Lieutenants Commanders
Who they are Named mercenaries with custom weapons. Many are operators from earlier Call of Duty games Huge threats: an armored minigun soldier, a giant drone, a battle tank
Are they in my match? Each one has a chance to appear in any match One is always somewhere on the map
How to find them Buy intel on the Boss Board, or use a Lieutenant Hunt tower in Hajin They show on the Tac-Map when you get close, and your Team Leader warns you
Can I buy intel? Yes No
Main reward XP, DMZ Cash, loot, a chance at their weapon, maybe a key, and their Dog Tag Case Cash on your first kill, prized 3D Printer Ingredients when you extract after a kill, and XP

The Commanders

  • Colossus: a seven-foot armored soldier with a minigun firing depleted-uranium rounds.
  • Deathstalker: an autonomous drone the size of a helicopter, with twin machine-gun turrets. A captured SAM Site fires on it, which is the only counter Activision has named for any Commander.
  • Main NK Battle Tank: patrols the map. Press who fought it called it the boss that just won’t die.

Most standard weapons do little to a Commander. Killing more than one earns an extra reward that Activision lists only as “classified”.

The Lieutenants

Lieutenants are mini-bosses. Each one always drops a Dog Tag Case when killed. Picking it up broadcasts your position to the lobby, so expect company on the way to exfil. Extracting it advances the Boss Board.

A Lieutenant who does not drop their weapon may carry a key to their own loot room, where that weapon can usually be found. See keys.

Confirmed Lieutenants so far include Bale, Roze and Jang-ui, whom PC Gamer met in a key-locked room guarded by four auto-turrets. See the full boss list.

The Boss Board

The Boss Board is the FOB station for boss hunting. It sells Lieutenant intel and tracks your kills.

  • Unlock: after your second DMZ Order, per Activision’s FOB guide.
  • Intel: buying it is the reliable way to make sure a specific Lieutenant is active. The price has not been published.
  • Seasons: extracting Lieutenant Dog Tags earns seasonal rewards, and Infinity Ward has described the goal as clearing every Lieutenant each season.

How to approach a boss

  1. Go geared: full plates, a Medkit, and as much ammo as you can carry.
  2. Clear the area first. Lieutenants have guards, and some rooms have turrets.
  3. Plan your exfil before you grab the Dog Tag Case.
  4. For the Deathstalker, capture a nearby SAM Site and stay close to it. The site is lost if you move too far away.

Still waiting on confirmation

We only state what Activision, Infinity Ward or the press have confirmed. These parts of the topic are not confirmed yet, and this page will be updated when they are:

  • Boss Board intel price
  • Whether buying intel guarantees a Lieutenant spawns
  • Full Lieutenant roster and spawn locations
